As well as sentencing guidelines, there is other guidance which can assist the courts when sentencing. This includes:
The Case Compendium
The Court of Appeal produces guidelines in the form of guideline judgments. Our predecessor body, the Sentencing Guidelines Council, collated these thematically into the compendium.
The following updates were issued by the Sentencing Guidelines Council; First Update; Second Update; Third Update; note to changes on Third Update; Fourth Update; Fifth Update.
Please note: these are no longer being updated and should be referred to for reference only.
Dangerous Offenders Guide
The Dangerous Offenders – Guide for Sentencers and Practitioners was issued in September 2007 as an addendum to the Guideline Judgments Case Compendium and amended in the light of the provisions in the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008. The guide brings together the statutory provisions and relevant case law to assist the judiciary and practitioners.
Please note: this is not a guideline. It is designed to be a helpful source of information to assist in the consistent application of the law.
Practice Directions
Practice Directions set out procedures to assist in achieving uniform practice. They also set out what is expected of those involved and what they can expect from the court.
The Recent Practice Directions are published on Her Majesty’s Courts Service website
Consolidated Criminal Practice Direction
The Consolidated Criminal Practice Direction consolidates existing Practice Directions, Practice Statements and Practice Notes to be applied in criminal courts in England and Wales.
The Consolidated Criminal Practice Direction can be found on the Ministry of Justice website.
